The story

The Parc des Princes, a stadium in the Auteuil quarter near Porte de Saint-Cloud, opened on 18 July 1897 as the Stade Vélodrome du Parc des Princes. Its 666.66-metre track circled a lawn, and Henri Desgrange was its director. It is today the oldest stadium still in use in France.

In 1903 Desgrange brought the first Tour de France to a finish here, as it would until 1967. The French rugby side met the All Blacks here in 1906. Rebuilt in 1932 with its pink track, the stadium hosted Racing, Stade Français, world title fights and European cup finals.

The Boulevard Périphérique was dug beneath the stadium in the late 1960s. The architect Roger Taillibert designed the new ground, opened on 25 May 1972: a concrete ellipse carried on cantilevered frames, with floodlights built into the roof. Paris Saint-Germain has played here since 1974.

Owned by the City of Paris, in the 16th arrondissement, the Parc holds about 48,500 spectators for PSG matches, concerts and events. Guided tours open its backstage areas outside match nights.
