The story

The Casino de Paris, a music hall on rue de Clichy, was born in 1880 at number 16, when the architects Sauffroy and Grémailly turned part of a roller-skating rink into the Palace-Théâtre. Here “casino” means a performance hall, not a gambling house.

Édouard Niermans restored it in 1891, adding a rococo hall under glass roofs, and the new Casino de Paris opened that October. In December 1891 its manager launched the fashion for paper confetti. In 1917 Léon Volterra staged the first revue, starring Gaby Deslys, with the first jazz band heard in France.

Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier then made its name. Rebuilt after the fire of 1922, the hall heard Josephine Baker sing J’ai deux amours in 1931. Henri Varna ran it until 1969, Line Renaud led its revues, and in 1972 Zizi Jeanmaire triumphed here in sets and costumes by Yves Saint Laurent, Erté and César.

Between Saint-Lazare and La Trinité, the Casino de Paris now hosts concerts and shows, with guided tours and a restaurant named Mistinguett.
