The story

Gallopin, the brasserie on Rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires facing the Bourse, opened in 1876. Gustave Gallopin signed the lease on 1 September and opened a small bar, selling beer and wine by the glass to the financiers of the exchange.

From the start he served the « gallopin », a small 12.5 centilitre beer in a silver tankard that kept it cool. About ten years later he created the first Anglo-American bar in Paris, then installed a great glass roof for the 1889 World’s Fair. At two in the afternoon a zinc bathtub kept the champagne cold for the day’s stock market coups.

Gustave Gallopin handed over to Camille Aymonier, who opened a third room at number 42 for the clerks, while the bosses kept the main bar. The financial advertising brokers gathered at the back. Four families followed: the Vilains, Grachs, Wagrez and Alexandres.

The brasserie now belongs to Maison Bucher. In the 2nd arrondissement, between the Bourse and the Opéra, it keeps the spirit of 1876: a bar for cocktails and fine wines, a lively room, a quieter patio, and brasserie cooking served from noon to midnight.
