Hôtel Lancaster, hotel on rue de Berri since 1925
Paris institution

The story
The Hôtel Lancaster is a hotel opened in 1925 at 7 rue de Berri, in the 8th arrondissement, a few steps from the Champs-Élysées. That year the Swiss hotelier Émile Wolf bought the town house built in 1889 for the politician Jacques Drake del Castillo, added four storeys and turned it into a hotel.
Wolf furnished it with his collection of 17th-century art and furniture, including eighty portraits and paintings by Boris Pastoukhoff. Noël Coward, Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten stayed here. Marlene Dietrich lived here for three years from 1937 and hid Erich Maria Remarque in her bathroom during a visit from Ribbentrop.
The Savoy group took the hotel over in 1970, then the decorator Grace Leo-Andrieu in 1996. Other owners followed, until a French family bought it at the end of 2018. The works gathered by Émile Wolf still hang in the house, and Marlene Dietrich’s suite bears her name.
On rue de Berri the hotel has 44 rooms and 10 suites around a patio. Its restaurant, Monsieur Lancaster, pays tribute to a Parisian friend of Marlene Dietrich who loved country cooking and told her of his finds. The house celebrated its centenary in 2025.
