The story

Mariage Frères, the tea house on the Rue du Bourg-Tibourg in the Marais, was founded on 1 June 1854 by Henri and Édouard Mariage. The two brothers began by importing teas and vanilla.

They were the sons of Aimé Mariage, who had settled in the Marais with Auguste in 1830, and the family traces its trade much further back: in 1660 Nicolas Mariage was sent by Louis XIV to bring back teas from Persia and India. The house then stayed in the family for more than a century.

Marthe Cottin, the last descendant, found no successor. Richard Bueno introduced her to Kitti Cha Sangmanee, a Thai law student, who bought the company in 1983. The house now has seven tea houses in Paris, five in Japan and one in London, opened in 2018, and more than 650 blends from 36 producing countries.

At 30 Rue du Bourg-Tibourg, in the 4th arrondissement, the historic tea house sells its teas and blends, and its first floor holds a small museum devoted to the history of tea.
