Théâtre Marigny, a theatre on the Champs-Élysées since 1855
Paris institution

The story
The Théâtre Marigny, on the carré Marigny at the corner of the Champs-Élysées and avenue de Marigny, begins in 1855: with an eye on the Exposition Universelle, Jacques Offenbach opened his Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens there on 5 July, in a small hall of conjuring shows run by Henri Lacaze.
In 1859 it became the Théâtre Deburau, named after the mime’s son, then the Folies-Marigny in 1865. Demolished in 1881, it gave way to a panorama by Charles Garnier, which the architect Édouard Niermans turned into a theatre in the round in 1894. Léon Volterra enlarged it in 1925 and staged Monsieur Beaucaire, Ciboulette and Coups de roulis.
In 1946 Simonne Volterra welcomed the company of Jean-Louis Barrault and Madeleine Renaud, which played Hamlet there. Elvire Popesco ran it from 1966 to 1978; the television programme Au théâtre ce soir was recorded there until 1988, and Citroën unveiled the DS there in 1955. Closed for works in 2013, it reopened in 2018 with Peau d’âne.
The City of Paris owns the building. In the 8th arrondissement, the theatre has a main auditorium and the Salle Popesco, and stages musicals, plays and family shows.
