The story
Le Wepler, a brasserie on place de Clichy, took its brasserie form in 1892. The house goes back to 1818, when Conrad Wepler, a German-born wine merchant and caterer, settled in the Batignolles, crossed the street in 1832 and later moved to the square.
Apollinaire, Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec and Utrillo met here. Vuillard painted the café around 1908, and Bonnard worked through its shop front in 1912. Céline opened Journey to the End of the Night within its walls, Henry Miller made it his haunt in Quiet Days in Clichy, and Truffaut filmed The 400 Blows outside.
Requisitioned during the Occupation, the Wepler gave part of its rooms to Pathé in 1956. Charles Bessière, from the Aveyron, bought it in 1976; his son Michel founded the Prix Wepler in 1998 with the Librairie des Abbesses. The Joulie group took over in 2017.
A seafood specialist, the brasserie serves hundreds of thousands of oysters a year. In 2026 major works are renewing its kitchens and dining room, whose decor is being restored in the spirit of the early twentieth century. It faces the Clichy crossroads at the foot of Montmartre.
