Izraël, world grocery on rue François-Miron since 1947

Paris institution

Izraël

The story

Izraël opened in 1947 at 30 rue François-Miron, in the Marais, as a grocery devoted to produce from the East and the Levant. The shop stands a few steps from what is now the Maison européenne de la photographie.

Its reputation rests on its store of spices, one of the most complete in Paris: from Turkish red lentils to bergamot, it stocks the ingredients other grocers do not. The Gault et Millau guide counts it among the finest Levantine shops in the city.

The house has kept its original manner. Shelves rise to the ceiling, candied fruit, pulses and spices fill every corner, and most goods are still sold loose, by weight, as in a bazaar.

On rue François-Miron, in the heart of the 4th arrondissement, Izraël still sells spices, condiments and oils, dried and candied fruit, olives, herring, gherkins, pistachios, Turkish delight and jams, along with a few prepared dishes and kitchen utensils.
