Musée national Eugène-Delacroix, rue de Furstemberg since 1932
Paris institution

The story
The Musée national Eugène-Delacroix opened in June 1932 on rue de Furstemberg, in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the painter’s last apartment and studio. It was created by the Society of Friends of Eugène Delacroix, chaired by Maurice Denis.
Delacroix moved in on 28 December 1857 to be nearer the church of Saint-Sulpice, where he was decorating a chapel. He had a studio built in the garden and lived here until his death on 13 August 1863. In 1928 the owner sought to end the lease; Maurice Denis and Paul Signac, joined by Henri Matisse and Édouard Vuillard, saved the place from demolition.
In 1952 the apartment was put up for sale; the Society sold part of its collection to the national museums, and the State received the apartment, studio and garden as a gift. A national museum since 1971, it has been part of the Louvre since 2004.
In the 6th arrondissement, visitors find the apartment of some 150 square metres, the staircase up to the studio and the garden. The collections bring together the painter’s paintings, drawings, palettes and writings, including Mary Magdalene in the Desert, The Education of the Virgin, painted at Nohant,, and an 1834 portrait of George Sand.
