Piscine Molitor, the Art Deco pool at Porte Molitor since 1929
Paris institution

The story
The Piscine Molitor, on rue Nungesser-et-Coli at Porte Molitor, was opened in 1929 by the Olympic champions Aileen Riggin Soule and Johnny Weissmuller. The architect Lucien Pollet designed it in the ocean-liner Art Deco style, with an indoor pool and an open-air pool ringed by changing cabins.
Weissmuller worked as a lifeguard there in the summer of 1929, three years before playing Tarzan. The master glassmaker Louis Barillet made the stained glass. It hosted fashion shows and water galas, and each winter the outdoor pool became the largest ice rink in Paris. On 5 July 1946 Louis Réard showed the bikini here, worn by Micheline Bernardini.
Closed on 31 August 1989 and saved from demolition by its listing in 1990, the pool was nonetheless almost entirely pulled down in 2012 and rebuilt in the image of the original. It reopened on 19 May 2014, its facade returned to its first yellow.
Between Roland-Garros and the Parc des Princes, in the 16th arrondissement, Molitor brings together its winter and summer pools, a 124-room hotel, a restaurant, a bar, a roof terrace and a spa. The pools are reserved for hotel guests and club members.
