The story

Quatrehomme is a cheese shop opened in 1949 at 62 rue de Sèvres, in the 7th arrondissement. Aliette, niece of Bernadette and Henri Surget, grocers on rue Mouffetard since 1935, founded a first Maison du Fromage here with her husband Claude, a farmer’s son.

During the war Bernadette ran the rue Mouffetard grocery alone, with Aliette’s help. In the 1970s Alain Quatrehomme joined the rue de Sèvres shop after studying at Jussieu. With Marie, whom he married in 1983, he turned the Maison du Fromage into a true cheese shop.

In 2000 Marie Quatrehomme became the first woman to receive the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France in cheese, at the first contest held for the trade, and in 2014 a knight of the Légion d’honneur. Their children Nathalie and Maxime joined in 2010: the fourth generation enlarged the cellars.

On rue de Sèvres the original shop offers 200 to 250 cheeses chosen by season, partly ripened in its own cellars, along with house specialities. It also holds cheese and wine tastings. The family runs four other cheese shops.
