Le Louxor, a cinema on boulevard de Magenta since 1921
Paris institution

The story
Le Louxor opened on 6 October 1921 at 170 boulevard de Magenta, on the corner of boulevard de La Chapelle: a 1,195-seat cinema built by the architect Henri Zipcy for the investor Henry Silberberg, on the site of the Sacré-Cœur Nouveautés store.
Its neo-Egyptian façade gives it its name: cobalt blue, black and gold mosaics by the decorator Amédée Tiberti, scarabs, cobras and a great winged disc. The Lutétia cinemas bought it in 1922, Pathé in 1929. In the 1970s it showed Indian and Egyptian films in their original version for local audiences.
The last screening took place on 29 November 1983. Sold to Tati, the building became a nightclub, then closed in 1988. Local associations campaigned, the City of Paris bought it in 2003, and the architect Philippe Pumain restored it. Le Louxor reopened on 18 April 2013 with three screens.
In the 10th arrondissement, the main Youssef Chahine hall has regained its 1921 decor, with two new screens below ground. It shows art-house films, film clubs and silent films with live music, and has its own Bar du Louxor.
