Élysée Montmartre, a venue on boulevard de Rochechouart since 1807
Paris institution

The story
The Élysée Montmartre, a venue at 72 boulevard Marguerite-de-Rochechouart, opened in 1807 as a ballroom at the foot of the Butte. Here people danced the quadrille naturaliste, the cancan, with Valentin le Désossé and Grille d’Égout. Émile Zola described its façade in L’Assommoir.
Toulouse-Lautrec painted here, the Quat’z’Arts ball was held here and Olivier Métra conducted an orchestra of forty. In 1889 Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler hired dancers from here for their Moulin-Rouge, La Goulue among them. In 1897 the architect Édouard-Jean Niermans reworked the hall using the frame of a pavilion by Gustave Eiffel.
After post-war boxing and wrestling, Jean-Louis Barrault staged Rabelais here in 1968. Then came Higelin, Patti Smith, David Bowie and Daft Punk. On 22 March 2011 a fire ravaged the hall; the façade, listed as a historic monument since 1988, survived. Julien Labrousse and Abel Nahmias bought the venue in 2014.
Reopened on 15 September 2016 with a concert by -M-, the hall holds 1,380 standing. At the top of the façade, a bas-relief comes from the Bal Mabille. It hosts concerts all year round in the 18th arrondissement, next door to the Trianon.
