The story

Angelina, the tea room on the Rue de Rivoli, opened in 1903 at number 226, opposite the Tuileries gardens. The Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer founded it under his own name, Rumpelmayer.

The architect Édouard-Jean Niermans designed its Belle Époque interior. Marcel Proust was a regular, and Coco Chanel, who loved the hot chocolate, always sat at the same table, the most discreet one, near the entrance. The Mont-Blanc, of meringue, whipped cream and chestnut cream, was created here in the 1900s.

His son René, then from 1916 René’s widow Angelina, carried on the business, which took the name Angelina. The Rumpelmayer family kept it until 1963. In 1982 scenes of La Boum 2 were filmed here with Sophie Marceau. The Groupe Bertrand took over the house in January 2005 and opened a café in New York in 2020.

On the Rue de Rivoli, in the 1st arrondissement, the main room keeps the look of its early days. It serves the L’Africain hot chocolate, the Mont-Blanc and the house pastries, at breakfast, lunch or teatime.
