The story

Théâtre Antoine opened in 1866 at 14 boulevard de Strasbourg, then still part of boulevard de Sébastopol. The Italian-style house first bore the name Théâtre des Menus-Plaisirs and stood on the site of a café-concert called Le XIXe Siècle.

In 1888 André Antoine brought his Théâtre Libre company here, and its naturalism changed the French stage. He took over the house in 1897 and gave it his name. Firmin Gémier followed in 1906, and in 1934 Marcel Paston installed the first revolving stage in Paris.

In 1943 the actress Simone Berriau took charge and staged the complete dramatic work of Jean-Paul Sartre, including the premiere of The Devil and the Good Lord in 1951, directed by Louis Jouvet. Her daughter Héléna Bossis succeeded her in 1984, with her husband Daniel Darès. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1989.

Since 2011 the company running the theatre has belonged to Jean-Marc Dumontet, at first alongside Laurent Ruquier, while the building remains with the Darès-Bossis family. Also named after Simone Berriau, the theatre stages plays in the 10th arrondissement.
