Caves Augé

The story

Caves Augé, the wine merchant on the Boulevard Haussmann, has sold wine at the same address since 1850, at number 116 in the 8th arrondissement. The Second Empire shop is one of the oldest and finest wine cellars in Paris.

Marcel Proust, who lived a few doors away at number 102, stocked his cellar here, and his housekeeper Céleste Albaret came to do her shopping. Later the wine merchant Marc Sibard left his mark on the shop for many years, known for prestige bottles and unusual labels.

The house has changed hands without its decor moving: mouldings, panelling, wooden bottle racks lined up like the shelves of an old library and an old goods lift are all still in place. The former sommelier Jérôme Moreau, who worked at Lucas-Carton, the Crillon and the Bristol, took over its running.

Near the church of Saint-Augustin, the shop offers thousands of bottles, from great growths to natural wines, magnums and jeroboams, whiskies and calvados, and holds a tasting one Saturday a month.
