Musée des Arts Décoratifs, a museum on rue de Rivoli since 1905
Paris institution

The story
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs opened on 29 May 1905 at 107 rue de Rivoli, in the Pavillon and Aile de Marsan of the Louvre palace. It grew out of an association founded in 1882 to cultivate in France “the arts that pursue beauty in the useful”.
The architect Gaston Redon fitted out the galleries. The collections grew through gifts and bequests: furniture, tableware, silver by Odiot and Christofle, Sèvres porcelain, wallpaper and toys. Jeanne Lanvin’s apartment was reassembled here, as was the study Pierre Chareau designed for the 1925 Exhibition.
The museum was reorganised in 1996, during the Grand Louvre project, took in fashion and textiles on reopening in 1997, then advertising in galleries designed by Jean Nouvel in 1999. It holds the Jean Dubuffet donation and the toy collection, and Bénédicte Gady has directed it since 2025.
On rue de Rivoli, the museum traces the decorative arts from the Middle Ages to present-day design, with some 6,000 objects on show, fashion exhibitions, a bookshop and a restaurant.
